How much will a square steel tube bend, under its own weight?

Quick and probably easy question for a structural engineer. A 6′ long stainless steel square tube. 2" x 2". Wall thickness is .083". Weight is 2.164 lbs/ft.

If I support this at both ends by welding it between two solid posts… how much will it deflect, under only it’s own weight?

While it will of course deflect under it’s own weight, for a 2" x 2" tube, 6 ft long weighing about 13lb, the deflection would be difficult to measure, and there will likely be more distortion resulting from the welding than the deflection from the tubes own weight. In fact, due to the welding, it wouldn’t surprise me any to see a negative (upwards) deflection.

    P = Applied load
    L = Length
    E = Modulus of Elasticity
    I = Moment of Ineria
    b= lenght of base
    h = height
    a = area
    d = distance from neutral axis

    Do you want to know if the beam will deflect under its own Weight? of do you want to know how much it will deflect if you apply an external load to it? Here is the equation you will want to use either way, they only thing that will change is the magnitude of your applied force, P.

    deflection for a fixed fixed support will be: D = P*L^3 / (316*E*I)
    I = 1/12 (b)(h)^3 + (a)*(d)^2
    You can probably find a chart with this in a mechanics of materials textbook if you have one

    Just so you know, the beam will not deflect under its own weight.
