Contex 10 calculator: Square of Pi

Contex model 10 is a fully mechanical calculator. Made in Denmark in the 60′s. To calculate the square of Pi, we can use the multiplication from left to right.

“When the product of two factors containing decimals may exceed the capacity of the machine, the multiplication should be made from left to right instead of from right to left. One figure at a time is dropped from the key factor at the right side of the keyboard. This may affect the accuracy of the answer two places from the right of the machine.”

The answer is 9,8696044 to 8 digits

Wierd and I’ve always thought it must have been cheap because of materials and way of construction.
Even the Curta-I was cheaper than Contex 10 :-O
But yes portability can be a consideration and whether you want one or two machines ;-)

    The prices in …
The prices in Germany around 1962:

    Original Odhner 227 DM 335,-
    Contex-10 DM 475,-
    Facit C1-13 DM 565,-

The Contex-10 wasn’t cheap. I think it was popular because it was more portable. Weight only 2,6 kg. I would buy the Original Odhner or the Contex if I were back in the 60′s.

LOL what a weirdo machine :D
Hope it have been cheap back then. What a pain to multiply (and keeping track of the right numbers). Then a Facit C1-13 would be easier. But adding and subtracting on this machine might be less tedious on this than Facit C1-13 etc.?
