PWD Presents Sewer Relief Plan For Washington Square West

January 14th, 2008
January 8th, 2008 the Washington Square West Civic Association hosted and open forum where Joanne Dahme from PWD presented their plan to protect resident’s basements and a sewer relief project for the neighborhood.

Many residents know the terror of having the sewer back up into their basements during a heavy rain storm. Washington Square West has had a difficult time in trying to deal with this problem and PWD has spent the past year putting together a Short term and Long term plan.

In the Short term there is now a Basement Protection Program in which PGW Inspectors come to problem homes, along with a sewer contractor to analyze why water is back flowing into homes. The current plan is to Cap/plug the floor drains in your basement and then where possible install backwater valves in the sidewalk between the curb trap and house. These valves allow water and waste to flow out but not back in. PWD will cover the costs of such installations as needed, so contact Joanne Dahme if you haven’t had an inspection yet.
Pine Street Sewer Project
Pine Street Sewer Project
Slated for 2009
In The Long Term PWD has done studies of where water collects during storms and compared that data with sewer backup complaints from the neighborhood. After much research the solution will be to install a major sewer pipe along the length of Pine Street from Front to Broad. This will be a 6000 foot pipe that widens as it reaches Front Street and will cost approximately $15,000,000. Construction will begin a year or a year and a half from now, estimated sometime in 2009. Gas, phone, cable and electric lines will be moved during construction and many providers of these services will be doing upgrades since the street is being ripped open for the sewer project. PWD has promised great care will be taken not to harm sidewalk trees during construction. Three blocks will be worked on at a time, so expect to detour around these areas.
